Teacher Biog
I began practicing yoga in '98. I was searching for something holistic that would give me relief from the demands of a stressful lifestyle. In 2000 I discovered Ashtanga, the vinyasa approach began to have quite a profound effect on my physical and mental wellbeing. The most noticeable change was how much calmer my mind became. I noticed that my usual pattern of thinking of 100 things at one time began to slow down and I was able to concentrate on one thing at once which helped me to focus on my creative work with better results.
I've trained extensively in Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga as taught by Sri K Pattabhi Jois. I have had the good fortune to study with him, and his grandson Sharath.
I study every year with Paul Dallaghan (one of the world's leading Certified Ashtanga and Pranayama teachers) who has a retreat centre on Koh Samui. My first retreat with him in 2003 introduced me to the benefits of limiting sensory input and a greater focus on breath than I'd experienced before. I began to notice the ability to watch the mind and create thoughts, instead of those thoughts creating me. I began to realise the true depth of yoga. Paul has brought both integrity and honesty to my practice, I completed the 500 hour Advanced Yoga Alliance certification with him and his teacher Sri O.P. Tiwari who is one of the few remaining sources on authentic teachings in the world today. Tiwari imparts a mastery of philosophical and scientific understanding of Yoga. He has been the director of Kaivalyadhama, a Yogic research institute in India for over 40 years.
I continue to further my knowledge and studies in health and nutrition, anatomy, pranayama and philosophy. My practice and teaching has been inspired by many world class teachers, Tiwariji in particular has given me greater understanding of the ancient wisdom of Yoga and how to integrate it simply into every day existence. Richard Freeman allowed me to see beyond the physical and western interpretation of Ashtanga, beyond the confines of the ego. I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to pass on the teachings of those I have studied with. My deepest respects go to those teachers who dedicate their lives to the path of Yoga and continue to be my daily inspiration to get on the mat and practice.
Respect and gratitude to Paul Dallaghan and Sri. O.P. Tiwari.
In loving memory of Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois
